The 7 rules applicable to multimodal transport Under Incoterms 2010, CIP (available for all modes of transport), and CIF (dedicated to maritime transport only) both meant that the seller pays for the carriage and insurance to the named destination. As a shipper, you must make sure the insurance levels are suitable depending on your merchandise. Here’s a quick breakdown of the transportation modes and their corresponding Incoterms. This Incoterms® rule was created specifically for containerized transport. It is also suitable for conventional maritime transport when the seller wants to retain the risks of unloading the ship at the port of destination. In this case, it is advisable to specify the place of availability (quay, under hoist, etc.).
The Incoterms 2010: The Current Incoterm Set. Incoterm 2010 consists of 11 terms of trade which are subdivided into two categories. The first category can be used with any mode of transportation. And the other one is used with only sea shipments. In 2018, the entire world is using the ICC’s set of 2010 Incoterm rules in the different operations.
INCOTERMS® — International Commercial Terms — are three-letter trade terms developed by International Chamber of Commerce and widely used in international and domestic contracts for the sale of goods. They're accepted by governments and shippers worldwide, and are used to prevent uncertainty or misunderstandings. The CIF clause does the same, but can only be used for sea transport where the destination is always a port and the delivery is on a ship. Under the Incoterms 2010, the seller was obliged to take out basic insurance that included ICC-C ( Institute Cargo Clauses) and included minimum insurance protection against explicitly mentioned damaging events.
Whenever Incoterms are chosen, it has to be stressed that they must be appropriate to the goods (type, weight, dimensions) that are going to be imported or delivered. In addition, the means of transport (road, rail, air or sea) also plays an influential role in the selection of the appropriate terms of sale.
